Hey old jumpers,
I submitted a rules change proposal this fall to allow the speed for Men4 jump to be increased to 33.6mph. A few other Men 4 jumpers and I are in agreement that we are well capable of handling more speed and just plain like going farther. My reasons are:
1. In other countries (all other countries I'm pretty sure) in the world the Veteran 2 division (45 to 55) goes 54k (33.6mph) 5 foot. Why should we go slower?
2. Big skis are pretty universal now (thanks RG) as is speed control. Jumping is safer now because of the jump style that big skis produce. One could argue that 33.6 is even safer in some ways than 31.7. Some of us older skiers are a little heavier now and it's easier to get in deep and out of position out of the turn without the extra speed to support your skis.
3. It's just more fun
I know some who have been at 31.7 for a few years will not want to change, and I understand this. There is a survey going around and I am curious what most of you think.
(I personally think Men3 should go 35.4mph, 5 foot. Veteran 1 (35 to 45) in the rest of the world goes 35 5 1/2, but thats your division now, youngsters)
What do you all think? For it? Against? Lets not have them pass it if the majority of us are not for it.

Reply with quote | #4 | Not being much of a jumper but still being very much involved with the sport and have a full understanding of the process. In full agreement with the proposal, the sad part is that their are a lot of stick in the mud old school idealism non jumpers running the sport and you may have a fight on your hands with this. I would put together a list of men4 jumpers that want to change to a faster speed and submit it along with your proposal. Being able to utilize the faster speed also helps with the saftey factor as a jumper does not have to wait so late to go far. |

Reply with quote | #5 | I am all for it. I've always thought that going from M2 to M3 was too much of a change , ramp height and speed all at once. It make's more sense to have a more "progressive reduction"
M2 5 1/2' 35.4mph M3 5' 35.4mph M4 5' 33.6mph M5 5' 31.7mph
I know this was discussed here a few years ago, not sure why nothing came of it then. |

Reply with quote | #7 | I AGREE WITH THE POST BY GREG T. BEING NEWELY ADDED TO M3 DIV IT WOULD BE NICE TO KEEP SPEED AT 35. AND ONLY LOWER IT TO 33.6 AT M4 DIV. AS A MORE GRADUAL CHANGE.

Reply with quote | #9 | I agree with all your reasons John... faster is better. At the very least, we should be jumping at the same speed as all others our age internationally. I think we need to respond to Scott Snape's survey before November 12th for our opinion to count officially, yes?

Reply with quote | #10 | Hey Danny, Sorry, you have to stay at 31.7. Its your "I beat everybody all the time" handicap. ha ha.
No seriously, I jumped this afternoon at 33.6mph. Pretty fun.
As I submitted the proposal, I dont get the survey, so I dont know the deadline. If you have an opinion, even if you arent Men4, send Scott Snape an email at (rssnape at yahoo dot com) in support of the change. If you are Men 3 it might help pave the way for your division to change later.
Hey Scott, when and who will discuss this?

Reply with quote | #15 | Hey this looks good to me. M2 5 1/2' 35.4mph M3 5' 35.4mph M4 5' 33.6mph M5 5' 31.7mph Is this in alignment with IWSF if that what it still called? Speed can help your scores. Technique/timing still wins all though, remember Scot's 195' @33.6 on a 5'?

Reply with quote | #16 | IWWF men3 (senior 1) actually goes 35.4mph and 5 1/2. The rest is the same.
If Men3 wants 35mph, someone in M3 needs to contact Scott Snape on the rules committee and apply for a rules change. Form is available on the USAWS website. rssnape at yahoo dot com
If this passes it will be up to the committee when it takes affect....after nationals 2010? Spring 2010? Now?
If you want to jump at 33.6 now go ahead. It wont hurt to move the speed around. Ive been jumping this week and have been going 33.6. Its no real transition, its just easier to go farther. Looks like the response is pretty positive so far! |
